Everything I’ve read says that having my phone number and address on my website is crucial, but my business is in my home and I don’t want this information public. What should I do?

The wisdom, generally, is that you should have your physical address, phone number, and email address prominently displayed on your website. There are a couple of reasons for this. First, search engines can match the address you have listed on your site against listings in directories such as google local and yelp, and use this information to match your website to local search queries. Just as importantly, the inclusion of this information lends legitimacy to your business and makes it easy for customers to contact you with inquiries.

There are exceptions to every rule, though, and working from a home address is one of them. You can still enter your address on google local and hide it from public viewing. That way, google knows your geography, but the public can’t see your home address. Just make sure that your website contains a clear, easy way for your customers to contact you. Your geography is still vital and should be mentioned in your content wherever possible, so that people in your region can find you. Good keyword research and customer knowledge can guide where and how to place your geography in your content.
